Working as an Associate Medical Manager at Roche, Andrew is at the forefront of change – although one of the most significant changes he has seen is in his own growth. Within Roche, he has found many opportunities to expand his network, learn from talented colleagues and enhance his technical knowledge. Roche’s supportive environment has given Andrew the freedom and courage to step well beyond his comfort zone.
“When you are a part of Roche, you are in a place that is deeply invested in supporting you to grow your career. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Roche in Australia and the UK. The support I received to move to Sydney was just fantastic – colleagues in both countries went above and beyond to help me make the leap across to the other side of the world.
I met someone from the Australian affiliate when they were seconded to Roche in the UK, and we had many conversations about the culture of the organisation, as well as the many opportunities – and I haven’t been disappointed. When I arrived in Australia, I started working within Medical Information and from there, grew a raft of skills that saw me become an Associate Medical Manager in Rheumatology.
Since taking on the role as Medical Manager, it’s literally been a hurricane of possibilities. I’m passionate about my work and pleased I can support the education of people through patient materials I develop. I’ve also been assisting the Roche USA team, and in doing that I’ve built my network with people over there too. Even though I’m part of an Australian team, I really feel part of a global community. I’ve been able to share my learnings and knowledge and also receive the same back. Collaborating across borders is fascinating and really useful as there are often so many synergies and similarities. We joke about “stealing with pride” from our colleagues in other countries to save reinventing the wheel – we’re all one big team and it feels good!
It’s not only the colleagues around you that support you to grow, it’s also the coaching from exceptional leaders and mentors who are so accessible. Sitting down with my manager during regular check-ins, I’ve been able to see just how much I have achieved, and can also be guided on what could be a possibility next.
What has been really fulfilling for me, has been playing a significant part in bringing together international medical experts to collaborate and learn from one another and the impact that has on patients' lives.
Being part of a global organisation means the world is your oyster, with opportunities across Asia, USA and Europe as well as Australia. To grow, you have to be bold, network and take control of options as they present themselves. You can certainly make the most of the possibilities across multiple regions - just as I have. Roche has a very fluid network and we’re all connected, so for me, I’ve done more than I ever imagined possible.”
